Recently, SIMON Building Materials has entered into an in‑depth technical cooperation with China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC). It will deliver a complete fair‑faced concrete protection system for multiple high‑speed railway station buildings along the Lan‑He Railway, addressing the industry‑wide challenge of fair‑faced concrete durability in the cold, high‑saline‑alkali regions of Northwest China.

 

 

The Lan‑He Railway runs through the transition zone between the Loess Plateau and the Qinghai‑Tibet Plateau. Along the route, winters are bitterly cold, soil features high salinity‑alkalinity, and ultraviolet radiation is intense. Conventional fair‑faced concrete protection solutions commonly suffer from efflorescence and whitening, freeze‑thaw spalling, ageing and discoloration within 3‑5 years, posing a major engineering pain point under such extreme operating conditions.

 

Tailored to the environmental characteristics of the project, SIMON adopted a custom dual‑system technology of “penetrative sealing plus film‑forming protection”. The silane penetrating primer penetrates deep into the concrete interior, blocks capillary pores and neutralizes free alkali to curb efflorescence at its source. The composite resin weather‑resistant topcoat forms a surface barrier to resist freeze‑thaw cycles, salt‑fog erosion and UV ageing. Cement‑based repair materials are also supplied for seamless defect remediation. The two parties jointly optimized three key construction procedures to guarantee qualified protection performance.

 

This cooperation not only preserves the minimalist aesthetic effect of fair‑faced concrete for the high‑speed railway station buildings, but also validates the reliability of concrete protection technologies under extreme environments. It provides a referable technical reference for similar infrastructure projects in Northwest China.
